Job title: Clinical Resource Nurse
Job Grade: Grade 6

Job purpose:

To develop, facilitate, educate and evaluate education provision throughout the hospital for the multidisciplinary team, with a specific focus on strengthening clinical skills and practice.

Principle accountabilities:

• To provide leadership especially role modeling, supervision mentoring and
preceptorship.
• To maintain professional and effective relationship/communication with health facility staff.
• To participate in the quality assurance and the work of other clinical instructors
• To ensure effective clinical supervision and practice facilitation of student/staff.
• To participate within change management programme’s within the organisation.
• To collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary workforce to plan and facilitate education programme and conduct needs analysis.
• To ensure effective clinical supervision and practice facilitation of student/staff.
• To participate in conference programme related events- (Internal and external)
• To participate in the quality assurance and the work of other clinical instructors
• To collaborate with health facilities managers in improving quality of care.
• To foster interdepartmental liaison in order to ensure maintenance of established level of service agreements and in accordance with Joint Commission International (JCI) and Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI).

• To participate in risk management processes with awareness of emergency procedures and hospital fire policy.

Education Responsibilities

• To prepare and deliver lessons effectively as required to the principles of adult learning including specific preparation of clinical materials and equipment.
• To identify learning tasks, simulated situations and provide access for interaction to all staff / students under his or her supervision.
• To participate in unit based orientation within specific clinical and non clinical areas.
• To design assessment for courses. Includes designing assessment instruments and criteria with consideration and contribution to compilation of final assessments, evaluation and reports.
• To utilize feedback mechanism to assess mastery concepts, skills and attitudes and to re-enforce learning. Assess clinical setting and prepare clinical teaching plans to support appropriate competency and staffs needs.
• To develop and maintain accurate competency based evaluation tools.
• To provide counseling and advice to staff and students as required.
• To collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary workforce to plan and facilitate education programmes.
• To communicate subject matter and encourage critical discourse to develop rational thinking
• To provide positive criticism to student/staff clinical performance.
• To take an active part in the induction and orientation of new staff.
• To promote clinical practice in line with relevant research and implementation of evidenced based practice.
• To contribute and promote research and development programmes within the health care facility.

What was previously a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), providing level II neonatal care, has been transformed into a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (N.I.C.U.), a level III tertiary facility, to characterise the level and intensity of care provided to the ill newborn infant.

The unit will have a total of 50 cot spaces of which 12 are designated as ventilator spaces.

The commitment of the Paediatric medical and nursing staff to evidence-based care has allowed us to offer our patients an array of technological opportunities including high frequency oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide inhalation, cerebral function monitoring and cranial and echocardiac sonography.

Our membership of the Vermont Oxford Neonatal network allows us to benchmark our outcomes with >300 international N.I.C.U.’s.

Our early neonatal mortality rate of 3-4 per 1000 live births is but on index of the quality of our neonatal care, and our unit has been classified in the top 25% category with respect to the rate of pneumothoraces, chronic lung disease, necrotising enterocolitis, fungal infection and length of stay.
